Q1: What is the Family Letter app, and how is it different from 1Password or your phone's built-in password manager?

Family Letter is a purely local family asset registry, not a password manager. It does not store passwords, and private keys and recovery phrases never enter the app. Keep everyday login passwords in your phone's built-in password manager; Family Letter simply helps you record what your family owns, where it is, and how to access it — so that just in case something unexpected happens, your family won't have to search everywhere.

Q2: Does Family Letter go online or upload my asset information to a server?

All data lives only on the user's phone. Vault data never goes online and is never uploaded to any server. The only network use is Google Play Billing for in-app purchase and restoring purchases.

Q3: What format are exported backups, and can a forgotten backup password be recovered?

Exported backups are .vault files protected by AES-256 encryption and years of cryptography engineering (not plain-text PDFs). The password lives only in the user's head; a wrong password or a single changed byte makes decryption fail. Because there is no cloud server, a forgotten password cannot be recovered — keep the backup file and the password separately and safely.

Q4: What is the difference between the free and Pro versions, and how do I restore my purchase on a new phone?

The free version allows up to 3 entries per category card, with unlimited entries when importing a backup. Pro is a one-time in-app purchase (no subscription: US$2.99, flat price worldwide). After purchase, entries are unlimited, encrypted backup export is enabled. On a new device, just tap "Restore Purchases" on the app's Settings page.

Q5: Which asset categories, attachment formats, and languages does Family Letter support?

12 built-in categories: Crypto Assets, Bank Accounts, Website Accounts, Social Accounts, Other, Email, 2FA Backup Codes, Servers, Notes, Letter Page, Emergency Manual, and Asset Inventory. Supports 12 languages and 4 themes; attachments support PDFs, images, text documents, and spreadsheets, up to 20MB per file.
